A Sincere Christmas

Tis the Season | That's Pretty Ace

Can you believe the holiday season is here? It seems like just yesterday it was Halloween. I get so excited for Christmas every year, and make all kinds of plans (make all of my gifts! custom wrapping paper! baking party with friends! go see a play!) and then time flies by and none of those things actually happen. I certainly don't think that a good Christmas is a 'formula' of the right activities - and I want to make sure the things I do this year aren't just about the wrapping or the activities, but truly about spending time with my loved ones.

There's so much joy involved in this season, and a time to reflect and be thankful is certainly involved. We have limited funds for activities and gifts this year, so I made a list of all of the things I'd like to do to make this year sincere on a budget:

01. I made Chris and I an advent calendar! Chris told me once that he always loved having one growing up. Ours is made up of 25 envelopes, and inside each one is something special we can do for each other or for others. Here are a few ideas: bake cookies together and give them to our neighbors, make a list of our favorite things that happened this year and pray together about them (thank you, God!), make a decoration together (pom-pom garland! paper snowflakes!), drive around and look for Christmas lights, or watch a Christmas movie from our childhood.

02. Send a Christmas card. It's our first year as a married couple, and I love sending snail mail. This is the one expense I didn't want to miss out on! I'm so excited to say a special 'thank you' to everyone involved with our wedding, friends who have moved away, and co-workers from throughout the year. It's been a very special year for us in so many ways, and it's taken a village to get us to where we are.

03. Serve a meal to our families. We love spending time with both sets of parents, and we want to say 'thank you' to them for helping us this year in a simple and sweet way. What could be better than fellowship around the dinner table?

I'm hoping that following through with these few simple ideas will help make our holiday more sincere - and maybe even slow down time a bit so that we remember to fully embrace the moment :) Will you join us? Comment and share your favorite Christmas activities or hopes for the season. And happy holidays to you!

PS... I'll be launching my holiday gift guide on Tuesday! So if you're scratching your head for a good gift for mom, that would be a good day to stop by TPA ;)
